Ruth's latest body of work embodies the all too familiar frustration between efforts to shape the world by raw will and utter stupefication in the face of modern existential complexity. The fact that her work could have (and, in fact, may have, during a trip to the petting zoo) been executed by an untrained goat only underscores this five-year-old's precocious success: she simultaneously manipulates modern yearnings for primitivistic purity, and laments that communicative competence inevitably entails dissimulation on at least one fundamental level.
