I want to say that I completely agree with Titi Che-Che’s comment. The green eye looking out from the black “skin” is dramatic. I’ve seen the original piece (at Hazel’s home)… it is spooky! I like it!

Nice lattice work on that pie!

It's wonderful when an artist can represent an entire thing by depicting just one piece of it. It forces the viewer to put his or her thinking cap on and reference all their knowledge of the world to try and figure it out. I've never seen "how to train your dragon" but it suddenly popped into my head when I saw this piece. You nailed Toothless. Way to go Hazel!

Wow, that green eye really stands out surrounded by the dark clay. Nice!

Cool textures around your dragon eye! They look like scales, and I like how they are different above and below the eye.

This painting inspired by Alma Thomas’ art has a lot of energy, good bright color and strong composition. I am curious how many class sessions you worked on this — it took a lot of focus and patience. Nice work!

I love how you were inspired by the work of Alma Thomas to create this beautiful artwork! It's a very happy and warming scene!

Hazel ~ Very nice work with the curvy shapes and special color of the Flamingo (one of our favorite birds). It looks like it’s taking a step forward. Did you know that their color comes from eating a lot of shrimp?
Posted 3 months ago by Linda (fan)

I love your flamingo! It's such an interesting creature, and you really captured the texture of the feathers and the waviness of the water (which the bird is skillfully walking through with it's long legs)!

That was a fun idea to turn them into dogs! It makes for a great parody.

It's been great to have this guy smiling at us during the holiday break :)

Nice! We will have to add this to our christmas artwork collection! - Mom

You came up with great patterns and colors for this!
Posted 5 months ago by Aron (Father)

Hazel ~ I like this lizard and its framing pattern. I also looked at the Gallery of pictures that your classmates made. The views of different animals and faces are great! I really like South American and Mexican art — in college I took a whole course about pre-Columbian art… very old and interesting to look at.

That is a very cool Lizard! I love it!

I do hope that is a friendly monster! I love your bold colors!
Posted 5 months ago by Charlotte (fan)

I know you said it's a giant duck, but I also could see it as tiny buildings with tiny people standing on them :) Either way, I wonder what the people are thinking!
Posted 5 months ago by Jill (fan)

Hazel ~ I like the color version of this picture more than the black pencil drawing, although it is the same scene. And I see that you added the Sun in the sky!
Posted 5 months ago by Linda (fan)

Hazel, all your details and colors combine to make a terrific example of a surrialistic art work. I visited Salvadore Dali's home town and saw some of his original works of art. Fascinating! Love, Mima

Hazel !! ~ To me, this looks like a day when a Huge swan was swimming in Lake Michigan by Chicago, and all the people were so excited they went up to the rooftops to get a better view. (Or, maybe it was on the Hudson River in New York City...) Maybe you will tell me more about the scene!

This is very exciting. I want to know more about what is going on here.

It is amazing what you find and then create when focusing in on a small part of a larger subject. Beautiful nature and art!

I love your H! It definitely makes me think of you! Love, Aunt Jill
Posted 8 months ago by Jill

wow! what a cool H!
Posted 8 months ago by Aria (Mother)

That’s a great, Big H that looks like it is floating on the water… and that could be Hazel herself swimming under the letter! We know she likes painting, riding her bike and playing music on the clarinet. I do have a question to ask her: what is the blue shape on top of the left side of the H ?
Posted 8 months ago by Linda

I love the variety of things that you created out of the half-letters of your name!
Posted 9 months ago by Aron (Father)

“Beautiful Oops” sounds like a fun book, and a great idea for starting a drawing or painting and turning a mistake into something beautiful or interesting. Mistakes can be a challenge to work with… you don’t have to just cover them up. Nice job, Hazel!

What a nice way to finish up the year in art. I love the way you shaded the colors, and the shapes of all the letters. I can't wait to see what you create next year!

I would love to visit this alien planet. I would want the artist as my guide, since you had all the ideas for what is what!
Posted 1 year ago by Aron (Father)

Well… it looks like this planet has pink and purple trees growing out of pink and purple soil ! Also, it might be very windy here since the creature’s hair looks like it is blowing to the side. I want to ask Hazel more about this scene. I like the picture a lot!

The pictures that you and Rachel made — Op Art — are pretty amazing! We could hardly believe that 4th graders could do this.

This looks great! I love her coral lips- they are quite an eye-catcher. I also love how you gave her a pentagon shaped face and a bold chin. She looks fierce! The freckles are cute too! She has so much personality.

This is a great cubist portrait! Did you have fun making the hair? It came out great!

Oh How cute!

Very good composition work. The bear fits nicely on the page. I also like how dark and fluttery you made his ribbon. It's a real attention- grabber.

Great teddy bear with shading! The differences between the highlights, mid-tones, and shadows makes it very clear which side is lit up!

Hazel, you very creatively gave this elephant a lot of character!
Posted 2 years ago by Aron (Father)

Hazel ~ I love this Elephant you made from a t.p. roll! The way you made the trunk with two easy cuts is creative. And whatever the things are in the bowl, the Elephant is looking at them with interest… must be hungry!

Pretty! I love this pond!

This is so cool! The symmetrical pattern is great, and I like the color choices as well. I love that you took on the challenge of something that started out hard while you figured it out and then it became easier.
Posted 2 years ago by Aron (Father)

I love the different shades of blue together with purple. There’s a lot of motion in this design…. like a pinwheel spinning. Nice work, Hazel!
Posted 2 years ago by Linda (Savta)

ooooohhhh! Pretty!!!!!!

What stick? I haven't seen any sticks. I bet it was fun to use your imagination for this one, and to think of several ideas before picking your favorite. Nice!
Posted 2 years ago by Aron (Father)

Hazel — in your drawing, we can see that the thing is clearly, definitely Not a stick. It’s the stem of a big red flower (tulip ?). And if anyone has any doubts, the pink character is telling us. ??
Posted 2 years ago by Savta

Ooh, this is super duper, Hazel! The color scheme, the watercolor background, and the geometric shapes are each individually pleasing and they also work together nicely. There's a lot to look at, too, in the patterning. I like it a lot! -- Aunt Jill
Posted 2 years ago by Jill

Very nice! You used a lot of different shapes in your Mandala, and it has nice symmetry (left-to-right, top-to-bottom, and along the diagonals). I also like how the background color doesn't follow that symmetry!
Posted 2 years ago by Aron (Father)

Hazel, I love your Banyan tree art project. It reminds me of a stain-glass window!
Posted 2 years ago by Aron (Father)

I don’t know what the subject/lesson for this artwork was, but when I look at it I see a tree with bright Fall leaves, red, yellow and orange. I like the shapes made by the tree branches. I don’t know why part of the background is green and part is blue… but it shows that something is changing in the scene. Nice job, Hazel!

Hazel, I love your choice of bold, bright colors.

What a pretty picture!
Posted 2 years ago by Aria (Mother)

Hazel, this still life painting is beautiful! The bright thick brush strokes in the background make a big statement, and I love that you made the vase clear, so that you can see the details of the water and stems. Did you enjoy painting in this stye?
Posted 2 years ago by Aron (Father)

Hazel ~ I really enjoy looking at this froggy drawing! The way you drew them in different poses and different sizes is great, and I especially like the side view of the guy with spots or bumps on his back. Rrribbit!!
Posted 2 years ago by Linda (Savta)

I love your Leap Day froggies! They look happy celebrating, and this looks like a good project to practice drawing.

Hazel, this is a very royal beginning for a castle.

What an interesting creature! With those strong back legs it looks like it's ready to jump!

I love your animal dream house! Is that a triple bunk bed? Is the animal wearing skates? I like the door in the tree, and the bike parked nearby. I can tell that you had fun designing this!
Posted 3 years ago by Aron (Father)

This is such a cool house!
Posted 3 years ago by Aria (Mother)

This is a great interpretation of the style of Andy Warhol. You turned something ordinary into something very interesting!
Posted 3 years ago by Aron (Father)

I like the way you used several bright colors. I can see the texture in the grass, and I love the red flowers! The person in the hot-air balloon is having fun. I’m curious about that big building.
Posted 3 years ago by Savta

You have created a beautiful landscape! From the flowers in the foreground, to the sky in the background, everything has interesting textures. Who is that in the hot air ballon?

Posted 3 years ago by Aron (Father)

I really like the color scheme of this artwork – both the selection of colors and how they are distributed. Great composition!
Posted 3 years ago by Jill

The plants and animals you have created in this are great! The dark green plants on the right side and bottom-right are so interesting. The butterfly and snake both look friendly to me. The way the snake goes around the tree, and the light and dark blue colors of the background give this artwork lots of depth. Nice!
Posted 3 years ago by Aron (Father)

I love how that snake wraps around the tree. It looks so real. Well done Hazel. Love, Mima

It looks like you had fun coming up with different shapes to use for the positive and negative spaces in this piece of art!

This invention looks very useful, and shows that you thought about how it looks as well as what it does.

This drawing by Hazel of a koala and dot patterns "blew me away"! I know the artist fairly well and I believe she has real talent.
Posted 4 years ago by Linda

What a cute Koala! I want to give him a hug!

I really like the colors. How did you come up with those? I also like the lines that show me that the tail is wagging, and that the dog is barking!
Posted 4 years ago by Aron (Father)

What a cute doggie!

This monster makes me smile!

awesome robot! I really like the shape of its face (especially the eyes) and the grabby hands... it looks like the kind of robot that would help you make cookies... and then eat most of them.
