Really nice rendition of Van Gogh’s Starry night. You’ve added your own rhythm to your version of this picture. Nice handling!

Hi Charles, My first impression of this great painting-- WOW! This looks like a really happy town. I like your color choices, too. The whole town seems to be dancing around on the background. You have a great imagination! It is so great it starts my own imagination going. I begin to imagine the kind of people who live in these houses. I think of them being inside & wonder what they are doing. It seems that the day is just getting started. Well, a person can make up a whole story when he let's his mind wander through this wonderful village!

I love this picture because owls are a favorite of mine and the contrast in colors with the owl, bright yellow and lovely flowers on the green is just lovely. Really, really nice.

Now, this guy is an entirely other story. Maybe it was originally pea pods or walnuts or something that grows, the painting resembles a purely abstract work. When I look at it I don't care what the "still life" was originally. I am immersed in the shapes and sizes of this stuff moving around inside this art work. There isn't one thing in this painting that is not important to its cohesive composition. It is well balanced and beautifully composed. Did this young artist have many lessons in "composition"? I doubt it. The wonderful arrangement of shapes and their sizes came to the artist naturally. This is painted by someone with a great sense of composition which, no doubt, is innate! Peapods, beans, or vegetables may have been the model for this work, but it is definitely more sophisticated than a painting of beans!

This tree represents a person. It could be you or any person like you. It takes the form of a tree but tells me about characteristics of a person. This tree is an independent fellow. It does not have to always be around other trees. It has a lot of thinking going on in its leaves and apples which are all held together with very strong branches which sit on top of a strong natural pedestal, its trunk. It lives in a peaceful meadow under a make believe yellow sky. It will live a long time, grow tall and wide and always be peaceful and kind, bringing happiness to anyone who takes the time to sit under it & know it.

At first when I look at this work I see its abstract elements. It is a symphony of shapes. It takes something from the real world (birch trees and birds) and depicts them in a very engaging composition. To my eye it is an abstract painting, until I realize that you have painted birds and tree trunks in a most creative way. And even after I know the subject matter, I see it as incidental to the meaning of the painting. I would declare it an abstract painting. It is extremely engaging.

This mask is surrounded by some "serious" red. It sort of pushes the mask forward and makes you look at it. If the background had visual interest (smears, scribbles, small shapes flying around it might pull my attention away from Mr. Mask). What do I like most--the black nose. That is the only black thing in the painting and I like that it has decidedly vertical lines. This "guy" isn't good nor is he evil or mean. A mask usually covers the personality of who wears it. It doesn't try to look like a real person. The small designs all over the mask are very well placed, and do not distract my eye from moving around the mask to look at small areas in a way that I am not also looking at it as a whole image. If this were a real "guy" I think he would be very stubborn or determined.

I like the scribbly lines. I like the composition (the treetops form a triangle and the scribbly technique in the treetops, grass, tree trunks & ground make everything seem loose). The water in the center sort of opens things up. The bottom part of the painting has a crowd of lines, I like the open sky above everything. It is the last thing one looks at but it is very important because it gives me room to breathe. I can see that you were not being careful. I like how loose the drawing is. I see this looseness in some of your other work, too. I like it.

I like this landscape because it is so abstract. One knows it is a landscape, but at the same time it is a non-objective painting. Essentially, it is all green: light green, dark green, blue green, brownish green. It goes everywhere and nowhere. It has plains and valleys. Because the shapes and colors go in every direction, I am forced to look at it all at once. It is like taking a chunk of memory and squeezing it all together. This is a painting of what my mind sees more than just what my eyes see.

Hey Charles, I really like your work. It's so much fun to see how "Charles" sees the world around him. I've spent my life looking at art, teaching art, and doing art. Here is the best advice I can give you: "Don't try to do a good painting, just try to do YOUR painting. When I look at the pictures posted on this site, I can see you are already doing that. I hope you keep on having fun and enjoy the ride. I look forward to seeing everything you do. Love, Aunt Janet
