The symmetry is neat. The more I look at it, the more details I notice. This must have been fun to create!

So cute! Looks like a stuffy friend.

Henry, this is so cool! How did you get it so symmetrical? It's wonderful.

Henry, this art startled me a little. You did a great job showing the negative and positive sides of your piece. Your detail is excellent! It almost made me think I was looking inside of someone's head! Another delightful work of art! Love, Aunt Mary

Once again, Henry, you have excelled at your art. Your choice of colors makes things look pretty gloomy and spooky. The wind, things strewn about, an open door, something questionable in the window, and what appears to be a bridge going to somewhere I wouldn't be going complete the package for this haunted house. Nice work!

Henry, this is a great-looking turtle! I am not familiar with oil pastel resist paint. You will have to explain that to me the next time I see you. I like your color choices. I am also sure that if I saw that turtle coming toward me, I would be moving in the opposite direction. :) XOXO Aunt Mary

Henry! I LOVE your weaving! I really like how the colors and texture of the yarns change, creating detail and movement in the piece. Hmmm. Now you can try using textiles! Keep up the good work. XOXO Aunt Mary

Henry, I honestly never thought about words or letters becoming art. I like the bold, framed look of your new piece. There is also great contrast in the image. I didn't have to think too hard about the word you chose. I believe I know where your inspiration came from. ? :) As usual, nice work! Love, Aunt Mary

Holly looks amazing!! Nice use of shading and color choices. XOXO Aunt Mary

Woah! Your latest work messed with my head a little bit! The way the tentacles and shapes got smaller kind of made me feel like I was falling into a hole! The variegated background colors and the bending of the tentacles almost created motion in my eyes. Amazing job! Love, Aunt Mary

As I've been looking at your art, I'm noticing some patterns emerge that make your "style." Art by Henry Zavada has intentionally contrasting colors and small details. Every time I look at something you make, I discover something new each time I see it. You truly possess an artist's spirit!

Such an expressive face on this bear!

the spider looks like it's wearing a Halloween sweater!

I have a Christmas ornament just like this :)
Posted 2 years ago by Angie (fan)
Ok this is a super cool technique. I would never think to try something like this.
Posted 2 years ago by Angie (fan)
I love how the spiderweb is connected to the vegetables, and you can see what's going on underground. It makes me think about what we can't even see when we're out in our backyard because it's happening beneath us!

The ghost and the way you can kind of see through it is my favorite part of this. The sky's colors give it dimension.
Posted 2 years ago by Angie (fan)
Henry, What a beautiful water lily! I like the way you created the 3D look with the graduated sizes of petals and color variation, sitting on top of the green pad. The different color lines that you drew in the background really give the illusion that the lily is floating. I like the peacefulness of it. Love, Aunt Mary

Henry - I'm so excited to finally see your clay pot. You've been telling me all about the process and how excited you were to work with clay. I like the alternating colors of the coils and how you designed the top.
Posted 2 years ago by Ashley (Mother)
Henry! All of those details and tiny lines must have taken you forever. I love his happy smile with his little teeth- it reminds me of when Beebs has her little teeth out. He looks super cozy, too. Well done!
Posted 2 years ago by Ashley (Mother)
Henry, this is a very cool coiled pot! I really like how you supported the top rail with little balls of clay. Very creative! Your color choices are perfect. They remind me of spring and summer flowers. :) You will have to tell me about how you scratch-attached the embellishments. Nice work! Love, Aunt Mary

What a very festive looking bear! While I like the subdued look of the bear, compared to the bright and colorful sweater they are wearing, I am honestly stunned by the number of marks it took to create the look of fur on the bear! Good grief!! My hand would have cramped up doing all that work! The delicate-looking snow and large snowflakes in the background were the perfect way to make your bear stand out from the image. Nice work, Henry! Love, Aunt Mary

Henry: In addition to being just plain cool, the way you tinted these leaf prints with white reminds me of when it gets really cold and frost hits the leaves on the ground. They get smooshed flat and sparkly. Sometimes when leaves get stuck to our window on a windy day, and the frost nips them, it looks like stained glass. Your art is a great sample of both. Nice work! Love, Aunt Mary
Posted 3 years ago by Aunt Mary
Henry- your leaf print is very, very cool. This must have taken a lot of patience to work on. I had fun taking our walk together to find leaves and I love seeing what you did with them!

Henry! Your skeleton cat turned out amazing. Even though it's a skeleton it still looks friendlier than Holly, doesn't it? ;) I love the bright colored background and all the little details in the bones. I can tell you worked hard on this! Keep up the good work in art class. Love, Mama
Posted 3 years ago by Ashley (Mother)
Henry, you know your mom hates spiders, but this guy is pretty cool! I like all the details you added, like the hair on its legs and the spiderweb background.
Posted 3 years ago by Ashley (Mother)
So cool, Henry! I love your skeleton cat! Your art really falls in line with the Day of the Dead Mexican celebration. The brightly-colored background makes your skeleton really pop out of the work. I especially like the background detail and the bone placement on the cat. I can tell how much work went into this. Nice job! Love, Aunt Mary
Posted 3 years ago by Aunt Mary
Henry, I have to say that if I ever saw a fancy spider like that in my house, I would probably run!! That said, I believe that must be the coolest-looking spider I have ever seen. Those hairy legs surely let him hold onto things well when he's moving. The spotted face makes me think that it must be a special variety of spider. My favorite part of your art, however, is the fact that the spider web has LOTS of bugs trapped in that giant web. It must have taken you a long time to do that. Artists do have to have patience. Nice work! Love, Aunt Mary

Henry, I love your fall tree! I was excited to see it after hearing you describe the process to make it. The sky makes me think of Van Gogh's starry night. I love all the different colors of the leaves, and the smile on the tree makes me laugh. Well done!
Posted 3 years ago by Ashley (Mother)
Henry, I have so been looking forward to fall! Your art makes me think of this spectacular time of year. Your tree looks amazing with all the colored leaves, and I like that the different-sized branches look like they are bending in the swirling wind. I love the pumpkin sitting on the fence, as well as the ghost sneaking up from behind. :) XOXO Aunt Mary

Henry, What a great way to illustrate life above and below the ground! I don't believe I have ever really contemplated all that goes on, and you have included so much for me to think about. Your sun is brilliant and calls to living organisms to reach up, while important things go on below the surface. I especially love that you show the ant tunnels, digging worms and the spiders that your mom loves so much. Excellent work! Love, Aunt Mary

Wow Henry - this is so beautiful. The background is super magical and I love the technique you used to make it have that dreamy effect. The detail in the butterfly really pops!

So many cool techniques in one piece! I particularly like the colors of the sky. This picture is super fun!

Henry, your giraffe on this piece of art looks like the happiest giraffe ever! I especially love the blue and purple background with the moon shining down on your giraffe like a spotlight. You did a nice job blending your colors. Your giraffe looks like a confident guy dancing against a peaceful sky. XOXO Aunt Mary

Wow!!! Henry, you are so talented! Grampa and I love the butterfly!
Posted 3 years ago by Grandma And Grandpa
Goodness, Henry! You are going to have to explain to me how you created this piece of art. The butterfly looks like it is hovering in front of a heavenly sky or over a magical pool of water with the colors you used. It almost looks 3D! Nice work! XOXO Aunt Mary
Posted 3 years ago by Aunt Mary
Henry - Your frog is really cool looking! I like the pattern you colored on your frog and the bright colors you used.
Posted 3 years ago by Ashley (Mother)
Wow Henry! Your butterfly is stunning! I love all the tiny details you added to the wings. The colors you chose look really pretty together- I like how some parts look really lacy.
Posted 3 years ago by Ashley (Mother)
Yikes, Henry! I've only seen a poison dart frog on exhibit. You did a spectacular job creating a 3D version. I love the way that the frog pops out on the leaf. It is very obvious that you put a lot of work into this project. The flowers and the colors on the frog look great. Keep up the good work. Love, Aunt Mary
Posted 3 years ago by Aunt Mary
There are so many things I like about this frog! The googly eyes, the rock "eggs," the plants, and the fact it is 3-D! I bet it looks even cooler in person.
Posted 3 years ago by Aunt Angie and Uncle Nate
Henry, what a nice job on your Poison Dart Frog. ?? We lived how you followed the directions, this looks like a hard project. Loved the colors you put on your frog. The colors and shapes remind me of Hawaii. Love, Memo and Papa. ????

Henry, we love your snowflakes. Love all the different shaped, sizes and colors. We know you love snow and enjoy what winter has to offer. I hope you make one for us, so we can hang it in the condo at Steamboat. Enjoy the snow and looking at all the different shapes. Love, Memo and Papa
Posted 3 years ago by Memo And Papa
Henry, this makes me think of looking at snowflakes in a microscope. This picture is a combination of your favorite things - snow, science and art! I like how each snowflake is has different shapes and colors. I can tell you put a lot of thought into this artwork!
Posted 3 years ago by Ashley (Mother)
I love how bright your heart is! The colors you chose look really pretty together.
Posted 3 years ago by Ashley (Mother)
Henry, I have to believe you were thinking about all the snow (and thunder snow) we got last week when you created this. I never knew that snowflakes had 6 arms! I like the way you displayed that with all the different sizes and shapes. The colors you used really make he snowflakes stand out. I almost wish our next snowfall came with colored snowflakes. :) Love, Aunt Mary
Posted 3 years ago by Aunt Mary
Each snowflake is beautiful and unique. The purple and blue framing and the white background make them "pop." My favorite is the green one toward the bottom.
Posted 3 years ago by Aunt Angie and Uncle Nate
Wow! This one has so many beautiful colors and textures. The technique you used to paint the inside of the heart looks interesting.
Posted 3 years ago by Aunt Angie and Uncle Nate
I can't believe I haven't commented on your donut yet! I know you're really proud of this one. It's super creative. That icing looks good enough to eat and the bite is so realistic. Great work!
Posted 3 years ago by Aunt Angie and Uncle Nate
This reminds me of your cherry blossom. What a cool series of images that would look super neat displayed next to one another - one summer one winter.
Posted 3 years ago by Aunt Angie and Uncle Nate
My first thought is how cool this would be as a quilt. I like the red and green stripes against the rainbow. Very nice!
Posted 3 years ago by Aunt Angie and Uncle Nate
My favorite part of this piece is the watercolor outline of the ghost. It makes him seem floaty. The shiny, bright eyes are an excellent detail.
Posted 3 years ago by Aunt Angie and Uncle Nate
You have made yet another outstanding piece of art! The beautiful cluster of colors in the heart reminds me of a stained glass window that has been framed. The blurring of the colors inside the heart, as well as the blending of colors outside of the heart, reminds me of the way someone might remember colors from a peaceful dream. Keep up the good work. Love, Aunt Mary

Henry we love your new artwork. It reminds us of Steamboat during a sunset, when the sky turns pink and snow on the branches. Hopefully you can see a sunset when you come skiing.
Posted 3 years ago by Memo And Papa
Henry! Your new piece of art is absolutely beautiful! The background color reminds me of when I am outside early in the morning on a snowy day (usually taking Bigby out), when the sun is trying to peek out from behind the clouds and makes the sky glow a little. Just like your artwork, you can still see the stars, the snowflakes sprinkle the sky and fall silently on the tree branches. I can almost feel that peacefulness when I look at this. XOXO. Aunt Mary

Henry your pine branch is so cool! The snow reminds me of Minecraft. I like the different colors you chose for the pine needles.
Posted 3 years ago by Ashley (Mother)
Henry this is so colorful! I can tell how much time and effort you put into this. I like that you chose to weave in Christmas colors, it makes it festive!
Posted 3 years ago by Ashley (Mother)
Henry, the way you chose to paint your circles of color, with a darker color in the center, makes me feel like someone's eye is looking out at me. The weaving gives it a bit of a mysterious look, as if someone is peering through something. Amazing work! Love, Aunt Mary

Henry, you did such a great job with all the details of your doughnut! I know you were very excited to work with clay again this year (especially since you noticed the kiln is now in the art room.) I like how you tell us all the steps you took to create your doughnut. I can tell you are being an awesome student and artist.
Posted 4 years ago by Ashley (Mother)
Henry! When I saw this, I thought it was REAL!! This clay doughnut has glaze and sprinkles! No wonder I thought it was a real doughnut! The pretend bite marks are excellent!! Love, Aunt Mary
Posted 4 years ago by Aunt Mary
Henry, This ghost is so cool! The combination of colors around the ghost make him look like he is floating. The way your ghost's eyes are looking makes me wonder if he is looking to see if another spider is going to crawl by him or if he was just looking for more yummy candy. Great spider, by the way! Love, Aunt Mary
Posted 4 years ago by Aunt Mary
Henry your ghost is awesome! I love the expression on his face. I like all the details you added- I can even see your favorite candy, Smarties in your picture! ?? Mama
Posted 4 years ago by Ashley (Mother)
Wow! What a lot of detail. I enjoy the way the cool colors of the background contrast with the warm colors of the leaves. The colors in the background remind me of the northern lights and the colors in the leaves make them glow like a candle or campfire! Your squirrel's eyes look realistic and his fur has a cool texture. Another great piece, Henry!
Posted 4 years ago by Aunt Angie and Uncle Nate
Henry: Once again, you have done an incredible job creating your art. When I looked at this piece, I almost imagined I was looking through a window with a chubby-faced squirrel staring in at me! Your squirrel looks very much like some of the squirrels that have been frolicking around in our yard. This guy looks like he has his cheeks full of nuts! I like that you chose different kinds of leaves in your background. It looks like you even have an oak leaf blowing around. Keep up the good work! Love, Aunt Mary
Posted 4 years ago by Aunt Mary
Henry! It's so fun to see your squirrel art after telling us about it. I love how it looks like your leaves are glowing. I can tell you put a lot of time and effort into all the details.

Henry, When I saw your cherry blossom art work, I immediately thought of Spring! I like how you used tissue paper for the blossoms. The way your branches were done, along with the moon in the background, remind me of a beautiful Japanese painting! This is one of my favorite pieces that you have done. ?? Love, Aunt Mary

Your latest piece of art is WILD!!! I like that you used a kind of math in the drawing of your tiger. Very clever! The way you drew the tiger's eyes and mouth made me think he was surprised, or even a little frightened. I wondered if maybe he had seen something he wasn't happy about. By the way, he has a SPECTACULAR tail! The colors you used for your jungle make your tiger really stand out. You will have to tell me how you did that the next time we see each other. I would also like to know why the grass looks like it's leaning outward toward me. Nice work! Love, Aunt Mary
Posted 4 years ago by Mary Anne
This might be my favorite of your art so far! There are so many details in this picture--I find something new every time I view it. I like how you use sharp shapes for the jungle cat against a background of soft colors. The curly whiskers make this guy look beautiful and fierce.
Posted 4 years ago by Aunt Angie and Uncle Nate
Wow - the tiger-striped piece of fabric in your weaving really catches my eye. Your dream reminds me of camping in the summer. I can't wait!
Posted 4 years ago by Aunt Angie and Uncle Nate
I like the blanket that you wove. It looks very cozy. I think the face you drew of yourself dreaming looks happy. Dreaming about ice cream can do that to a person. I hope you were holding onto your ice cream tightly when you dove into the water. XOXO Aunt Mary

Henry, This is quite a clay snowman sculpture! I enjoyed reading the steps you had to follow to complete the project. It sounded like a lot of work! This looks like it took a LONG time to work on. You have great face details, dancing arms and a festive scarf. I especially like the fancy hair you made for your snowman. I think he looks like George Washington. Love, Aunt Mary

Hi Henry! I like the details you added to your owl, like the white squiggly feathers. It must have taken some time and patience for you to do, but a neat effect is the result. It seems like you used a lot of different tools for this piece as well. Keep up the good work! You are so creative.

Henry, you are really learning some great things about art! We were recently at the Detroit Institute of Art and saw some of Cezanne's pieces while we were there. We can see how hard you worked learning his technique. The colors of your apples look like some of the apples we saw at the cider mill over the weekend. This is a great fall art piece! We can't wait to show Andrew your work. Love, Aunt Mary and Uncle Ricky.

Henry, You taught us something new! We had never heard of the artist, Jasper Johns, until today! We can tell that this art project was a lot of work. Aunt Mary thinks she would have to take a nap after creating something like this. The colors you chose are very bright. The letters you made are nice and big so that we can see them without our glasses. Keep up the good work! Love, Aunt Mary & Uncle Ricky
