School Violence Awareness Week
from Mrs. Sakewicz-Frank
“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” ~Gandhi

This week in art class students worked on a variety of art projects, taking time to give others positive comments about their art. Please take time to approve your young artists comments and leave messages of encouragement.

Join Mannington Township School, Katelyn Darrow, and
Kid President in providing warm socks for those in need.

As part of School Violence Awareness Week, students in art class were introduced to ways we could help others through the words of Kid President (links to his videos can be found on my school webpage). Kid President's Socktober drive is an international movement to build awareness of the needy in our communities. He asks us to look for organizations such as the one run by Katelyn Darrow and find out how we can help others.

On Tuesday, October 28th, Katelyn Darrow, the 18 year old founder of the non-profit organization, Angels Clothing Closet, located in Pitman, New Jersey, will present an assembly to our 4th through 8th grade classes. Her mission is to provide clothing and more to those in need. The clothing closet is set up in a storefront in Pitman, where referred clients can shop at no cost. She will explain how she started her mission in July 2009 at just 12-years-old, and has provided clothing to over 8000 families since opening. Her clothing closet works together with local churches, agencies, and shelters, for referrals of people they can help together. With the way the economy is today, her organization wants to relieve financial stress from families by providing necessities such as clothes and toiletries. Her charity's services are limited to twice-a-month "shopping sprees", when disadvantaged clients can visit the Pitman storefront and shop for clothes that are given to them for free.

To help out Katelyn’s Clothing Closet please bring in a warm pair of socks by October 28th when we will present Katelyn with the socks for her charity. Students can also donate cereal or snacks that will be given to a local food pantry.

Thank you for taking time to read my newsletter and I wish you a violence free year.
