I started teaching at Roxboro Elementary in 1996. I feel lucky to be here because the arts are highly valued and well supported by our community. 13 years ago I began to teach using the TAB (Teaching for Artistic Behavior) philosophy. My students learn how to behave like artists. They use our studio space to carry out their own artistic visions, at the same time they learn new information from me and their classmates. Once or twice a year we do a whole-class project that still will include choices, but ... read more the remainder of the time, Roxboro artists make their own artistic choices, utilizing various centers in the room. Centers include: drawing, painting, clay, collage, textiles, construction, as well as various, rotating mini-centers.
Roxboro is also an International Baccalaureate world school. The TAB philosophy fits perfectly with the IB philosophy in that our artists are inquirers, problem solvers, and highly reflective, and allow their own interests to drive their work.
