I have been passionate about art for as long as I can remember. I'm in my 24th year of teaching and I love what I do! I currently teach 6th, 7th and 8th grade students ranging from academically gifted to special needs. I am so proud of my students regardless of their artistic abilities or skill level. I encourage all of them to do their best each and every day! My teaching style in based on "Discipline Based Art Education" (commonly called DBAE) which is an art education method that goes beyond painting a ... read morepretty picture. DBAE promotes higher level thinking skills, original problem solving skills, cultural and global awareness, verbal and non-verbal communication, and other skills that will help students throughout their lives. These goals are accomplished by teaching art history, criticism and aesthetics as well as production. I am saddened when I hear that some school districts are removing art programs from schools due to budget cuts and the like. There are SO MANY reasons why school disctricts should keep art in the schools. As an Art Educator I strongly believe the following:
I believe that the arts support the development of the whole child.
I believe that arts education is an integral component of education.
I believe that all children have a right to develop their abilities in the arts.
I believe that arts education significantly contributes to the quality of life.
I believe that the arts provide students the avenue through which they can enhance their social skills.
I believe that the knowledge gained in the arts supports student achievement across the curriculum.
I believe the arts enrich and facilitate the ability for students to communicate with others.
I believe that every child has artistic abilities, whether it be in music, visual arts, dance, or drama.
I believe that arts education strengthens positive self-concepts of the students.
I believe that the arts contribute to the understanding of other individuals in our diverse society.
I believe that arts education is a constraint on negative and violent behavior.
I believe the arts are part of the life-long learning experience.
I believe that the arts foster positive relationships among all people.
