My teaching career began in 1980 with part time jobs and substitute teaching. My big break came in 1983 when an art position opened up in the Anthony Wayne School District in Whitehouse, Ohio. I have been there ever since and totally LOVE my job! It has been my privilege to teach every grade from pre-school through grade twelve, and even some adult classes. By far my favorite are the middle schoolers, grades 5 & 6. They are experienced enough to use the equipment and media independently, they can handl ... read moree multiple and written instructions, they still like to cut their creativity loose to try wild and weird new things, and finally, adult approval is not something to be embarrassed about. We have an Art Club that meets after school which has been a big hit. I volunteer my time because it is so much fun to work with the really interested art students. We started out making ceramics, fused glass jewelry, and pet rocks for ourselves and some to sell as a fund raiser to purchase art display panels for our annual Art Show. The sales were so successful that we bought fourteen panels and made contributions to the Blue Creek Conservancy, the Black Swamp Conservancy, the Anthony Wayne Scholarship Fund, the Anthony Wayne Foundation, and the A.W. Levy Fund. This year we will add contributions to groups that promote world peace such as the International Services of Hope, a locally based organization. Our Annual Art Show takes place on the second Saturday of May, in conjunction with the FFA, choirs & drama departments. It is really a fantastic Arts Festival with singing, acting, a flower auction/sale, and of course thousands of pieces of student work from grades K-12. We have a make-and-take craft table and sell Art Club treasures. I am looking forward to posting artwork that will be on display at our Art Show as well as some of the Art Club's creations. Thanks for checking us out! Mrs. Andrea Baker, M.Ed. Fine Art Specialist
