I am a painter and art educator! I teach literacy through the arts at Academic Leadership Charter School to PreK-4th grade. I focus on the different genres with in art. Students practice drawing, color theory, and composition. It is hugely important for them to understand the context and history of the art works that we discuss so students are encouraged to recall the different isms we discuss as we progress throughout the year. When my students complete their paintings they often write about them. ... read more They make inferences about the mood and tone in their works. They discuss the decisions they made in their works as well as any questions they might have for the artist it was inspired by. Students will also compare and contrast different works of art. I plan many museum visits with my students in which they bring along their art notebooks to take notes and draw from things they are inspired by this is how students develop and understand their own taste--the things that draw them in. I am always so amazing by their fearlessness when discussing art works and I learn so much from my students everyday!
