During this project, students practiced observational drawing strategies. They used the "Bite Size Pieces" strategy by breaking their image of choice into grid squares to enlarge. The kids used "Quick -Eyes" and "Candy Bar Rule" to compare the lines and shapes in their drawing for accuracy. During the drawing phase, we emphasized the benefits of drawing with a light broken "sketchy" line instead of a hard solid line. Next, the kids practiced a variety of chalk techniques. We talked about helpful chalk strategies and common problems to avoid in order to maintain control of this medium. Students focused on blending colors and values with smooth transitions. Understanding color theory was important for color mixing using chalk.
