Artists are influenced by the form of African masks to create artworks
3rd grade students from PS/MS282 extended their homeroom study of Africa into art class. They revisited the continent’s geography and gained awareness of the function of various African tribal face masks. Additionally they learned how the form of African masks influence the appearance of many works of modern art as globalization emerged as a new phenomena. After understanding art concepts about symmetry, as well as positive and negative space, students create a modern version of an African mask, using collage. The forms each student used is related to the traditional mask characteristics of particular tribes, infused with a modern ritual function of their choosing
Excellent work students!
