Paint Nite in Mannington

Registration Link: http://paintnite.com/pages/events/view/southernnj/922300
This year I am trying a new type of fundraiser, Paint Nites, to earn funds to pay for the extras in the artroom, such as art contest/show entry expenses, sewing machine repair, field trips, extra fine arts supplies, mural paint supplies, etc.

Paint Nite is a company that provides adult paint experiences. They provide all of the materials you need to create your masterpiece. You provide the beverage of your choice. Our paint nite will take place at the Mannington Grange on the corner of Compromise and Swedesbridge Roads. We will have an assortment of appetizers and desserts. Please share the link above with everyone you know and ask them to register by October 23rd for our first event on Nov 6th at 7pm. The cost is $45.00. A flyer went home this week, but registration must be completed online. For more information contact Mrs. Sakewicz-Frank.

Creativity is Messy and We Are Very Creative!
While I do my best at the lower grades to order "washable" media those colors don't always wash out. Please remember to send a smock with your younger students and save those brand new outfits for another day.

Enrichment Class in the Art Room
Once again this year, students in grades 4 through 8 had the opportunity to choose enrichment classes. I am offering Art of the Book Mondays with Mrs. Ridgway-Stiles, The Power of Art, and Keep Calm and Zentangle.

During Monday's class, Mrs. Ridgway-Stiles and I are guiding the students in planning, writing, and illustrating a book about endangered animals. The students are researching the animals and when finished we will send the book out to be published as a hard cover book. Students and their families will have the opportunity to order copies in late Winter or early spring. Look for more information closer to the publication date.

Tuesday's Power of Art group is looking into ways to spread our love of art throughout the school building. Currently, we are researching and creating sketches for paintings to add to PreK's Alphabet ceiling tiles.

Wednesday and Thursday's Power of Art groups are creating cards for hospitalized children and designs for the Doodle 4 Google art contests. The students will work on other service projects throughout the fall, including decorating bags for Meals on Wheels holiday meals.

Friday during Keep Calm and Zentangle, students will explore the relaxing properties of the Zentangle method. We will start with simple step by step tangles and move into creating more elaborate strings to which we add tangles.
The Zentangle® Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. It was created by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. To learn more visit zentangle.com. Our first lesson taught students the Zentangle motto: "Anything is possible, one stroke at a time."

Mystery Artist Project

This year I have set up a bulletin board by the artroom with a monthly Mystery Artist. Examples of the artist's work are on display with several hints under the artwork. Students are invited to fill out an entry form with their name and the name of the mystery artist and out it in the can in the artroom. One entry, with the correct answer, will be pulled on the last day of the month by the previous month's winner. The winner will get to chose an Artsonia sketchbook with their choice of artwork on the cover. Annika in 8th grade correctly named Grandma Moses as the September artist of the month. The October Mystery Artist has 3 works of art on display and several hints. One hint this artist is known as the father of Cubism.

2014-2015 Year in Review
The 2014-15 school year was a rewarding year artistically speaking. The Power of Art enrichment class was added to our school schedule. Students and alumni from our school carved at the Giant Pumpkin Carve for Meals on Wheels. Our students decorated a tree on display at Christmas Trees on Parade to raise money for local charities. 7th and 8th grade visited the Brandywine River Museum. Our students' art was displayed at the Sweet on Seniors Meals on Wheels event in February. One of last year's 7th grade students designed the 2015 Salem County Fair t-shirt.

Reminder: Remember to check out my school webpage for upcoming art contests, homework, class assignments, and general updates.

Our school's Artsonia page is a great place to visit to see what is happening in the artroom across grade levels. http://www.artsonia.com/mannington1 Take a moment to send a young artist a comment about their artwork and view other classes work, as well as the enrichment classes projects.
