Foster Art Poll Link, and More!
from Cynthia McKeon, Foster School Art Teacher
I apologize!

I neglected to provide you with a link to the 3 question poll that I referenced in last week's newsletter.  The "newsletter feature" on Artsonia is new to me - I had written the entire newletter once, linked to the page, then pushed the "try links" button - while the link worked, unfortunately, the text of the newletter disappeared.  I needed to re-write the newsletter.  In my haste to send out the information prior to my next class, I unfortunately did not include the link.  As I am only able to send a newsletter 1x every week, I was not able to send this until today.  While this will also be in the Green Sheet this week, I also wanted to hear from all of the "fans" out there (including grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, etc.)

Here is the link for you:  http://fosterart.weebly.com/opinions-please.html

If you would like, poke around the Foster Art site a bit.  There are links to art activities for children (such as the amazing National Gallery of Art site) as well as information on "Art Teacher Approved" iOS art apps.   If there is any other information that you would like me to provide on the site, I am very responsive to those types of requests.

Thank you!!!!

Just for Kindergarten

This time of year, I start really looking forward to first grade with your children, because I can't wait to have them more often!  First grade students have art for 40 minutes three times every 12 school days (instead of for 30 minutes one time every 12 school days.)

Your children are very excited with their current project - they created silhouettes of creatures that remind them of Spring, and are filling them with lines/textures from a "menu" (and are also creating their own!)

Just for Grade 1

First grade students just finished their Nursery Rhyme sculptures, as well as the mini environment that they created for their sculpture to "live" in - they used model magic, (which I highly recommend) watercolor, pen and colored pencil to complete their pieces.  They had a great time while learning about sculpting, painting and new ways to use pens and colored pencils.  They are quite dedicated artists!

Just for Grade 2

The second grades are finishing their Family Portraits based on the art of Mary Cassatt.  The children also wrote a short description about their art which I am in the process of typing up for them.  Their art is quite charming - please read about the lesson on the Artsonia Gallery page.  Not all of the images have been uploaded yet - one class still needs to write about their work, and I need to find the time to edit the art of another class,  All galleries may be found here:  http://www.artsonia.com/schools/school.asp?id=104097
Scroll down - the galleries are in alphabetical order, by class code.   They should be published over the weekend.

Just for Grade 3

Hello third grade families!  If your child has not written about their mini-masks, I encourage you to encourage them to do so.  They come out with the most amazing thoughts and ideas, and it really gives us all a peek into the creativity and connections that they are making in art class.  While I can "see" the work and I try to have conversations with each child, from the beginning to the end of class is a short time.  I would love each child to write about these pieces if possible.  All families who are signed up on Artsonia AND have confirmed their accounts will be able to sign in and see that their child is able to write about their work at home.

It is fine if you type what they tell you to type.  Or they can type themselves.  I try to scribe during art class, but since the time is so short, I hope that you will ask them to spend five minutes at home writing about their amazing pieces!

Just for Grade 4

Thank you for all the comments about the Chinese Guardian sculptures!  I hope that you have enjoyed all the photographs.  I tried to photograph each child's art pre and post painting, so each child has about 10 photographs of their sculptures.  At 27 or so per class x 10 photographs, x 4 classes, that is over 1,000 photographs.  I am writing a grant for 6 iPads for the art room, and I will be using them to teach the children how to take their own photographs (and crop/edit for lighting) as well as using various apps - I would love to teach animation among other lessons.  Please keep your fingers crossed!

Just for Grade 5

Fifth grade students have received information on the 4th of July Button Contest, and have all worked for one class on their designs.  If they want to submit their designs, they must do so prior to April 2nd.  Please encourage them to enter their designs!  Thank you!
Artsonia is the largest student art museum in the world! Our dream is that every young artist will have an online art gallery, preserving their masterpieces in a digital portfolio!
