February 2026: News from the Art Room
from Ms. Micallef

Dear SRS Families,

It's been a busy winter and we've already passed our 100th day of school! Here’s a quick update on what SRS artists are creating in the art room.

3rd Grade: Third grade artists are working on amate bark paintings. After learning about the process and history of amate bark paper, students are painting rainforest scenes using animals as inspiration. This project emphasizes texture, neat drawing skills, adding details, and developing painting skills.

4th Grade: Fourth graders are currently juggling two projects. First, they are creating endangered species portraits with a focus on neatness, effort, and creative design choices.  In addition, fourth grade artists are working on a printmaking project.  After learning about Koinobori, carp-shaped windsocks flown in honor of Children’s Day in Japan, students are designing their own Koinobori on fabric.  This project focuses on printmaking, cutting, gluing, embellishing, and following multi-step directions.

5th Grade: Fifth grade artists began 2026 collaborating on a claymation project.  They started in art class with the planning and sculpting components and they are finishing up their movies in technology and music classes.  We hope to debut their films at the art show in May and then upload them to Artsonia. Once claymation wraps up in art, students are designing nature cottages.  This project focuses on drawing skills — specifically balance, effective use of space, adding value — and presentation skills such as neatness, planning, and effort.

Thank you for your support!

Have a wonderful day,

Ms. Micallef

Artsonia is the largest student art museum in the world! Our dream is that every young artist will have an online art gallery, preserving their masterpieces in a digital portfolio!
