About this School Project (Japanese Cherry Blossoms)
Each year our Nation's Capitol celebrates the beautiful gift of 3,000 Cherry Trees from Japan. The trees were given to the US as a sign of friendship in 1913. When the trees are in full bloom, usually late March to mid April, thousands of visitors come to attend festivals, parades, cultural events and just to see the beauty of the trees. Second grade students learned of this traditional festival and then created art based of the Japanese Cherry Trees. Students used tempera paint to paint the branches and leaves and then used recycled coke bottles to print the pink blossoms. Students also used plastic dosage cups to create the circle pattern surrounding the blossoms.
